LUNAR NEW YEAR

LUNAR NEW YEAR 2019

YEAR OF THE ROOSTER

SORRY FOR THE DELAY
LAUNCH EVENT AT MEETING HOUSE SQUARE [CHINESE NEW YEAR 2017 - THE YEAR OF THE ROOSTER]

I attend an event yesterday where the possibility of setting up a ‘Chinatown’ in was discussed. In general most attendees but especially second generation Chinese were not in favour and I was inclined to agree with the reasons that they put forward. Many years ago there was a similar discussion about setting up a ‘Chinatown’ in the Dame Street area where there was a cluster of Chinese Restaurants [Hong Kong]. Today all the original Chinese restaurants on Dame Street have ceased trading in the area.

I live in the area where it was proposed that ‘Chinatown’ should be established and there are many Asian restaurants but the majority of them are not Chinese.

I was not going to publish these photographs but as I have attended this event every year for about eight years I decided that I should upload them even if I was not with the over quality or relevance.

If you are a street photographer it is often the case that things do not go well. This year I went to meeting house square to photograph the beginning of the Chinese New Year Festival in Dublin. I arrived about an hour before the event was due to begin and I found a good elevated location but was asked to relocate [not unreasonable] and as a result I could not get a good view because of the layout.

Unfortunately things got worse as the organisers, security staff and approved photographers kept blocking my view. After a while I just went home as the exercise was totally pointless.

Using a 35mm lens rather than a 24-70mm or a 70-200mm lens many have been a mistake on my part

After examining footage online I have concluded that other photographers has similar problems because the majority of the photographs that I have seen are very poor. Even the national newspapers featured low quality images.

BTW women [or men] with ponytails standing beside you can be a huge problem when taking photographs of an event. Lesson … do not stand beside someone with a ponytail or long blond hair [unless you use focus lock … I have yet to master this technique]
