ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN PILOT STREET [SAILORSTOWN AREA BELFAST]
I could not find this church the last time I visited Belfast but this time I came across it by accident.
The “Chapel on the Quays”, as it is known, served the community of Sailorstown and many foreign sailors for about 120 years.
In 1984, at the invitation of Bishop Cathal Daly, Bishop of Down and Connor, the Franciscan friars took possession of St. Joseph’s Church in Pilot Street and appointed a community in the adjacent parish house. There they provided religious services until 1996: from then until 2004 they ministered in a variety of services in Belfast city until the community finally left in 2004. Note: According to some accounts it was closed to the public in 2001.
